AWESOME to do this SPRING?

Join a band! From February through May, students will learn their favorite songs, build confidence, and collaborate with peers in weekly rehearsals—culminating in a live performance at the Towsontown Spring Festival.

Not sure if it’s the right fit? We offer a free band drop-in so students can try it out before committing. There’s also no requirement to be a current student to join one of our bands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Band Program

  • Some basic familiarity with an instrument is helpful, but students do not need to be advanced players. Our bands are designed to help musicians grow by playing together, learning songs, and developing confidence in a supportive group environment

  • Most bands include electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and vocals. Students playing other instruments are also welcome to join and try the program. We do our best to place everyone in a band where they can contribute and have fun.

  • Yes! We offer a free drop-in rehearsal so students can experience what a band rehearsal is like before signing up. It’s a great way to meet the teacher, play with other musicians, and see if the program is a good fit.

  • Most students join once they have a basic understanding of their instrument, often around ages 9–10 and up. If you’re unsure whether your child is ready, we’re happy to help you decide.

Getting Started

  • During rehearsals, students learn and play popular songs together as a group. They work on timing, listening, collaboration, and stage presence while having fun making music with other students.

  • Students are placed based on their instrument, age, and experience level. We aim to create bands where students feel comfortable, challenged, and excited to play together.

  • Finding the right musical fit is important. If a student needs a different group, we will do our best to adjust band placements so everyone has a positive experience.

Band Experience

  • Bands rehearse once per week with a teacher who guides the group through songs, musical skills, and ensemble playing. Rehearsals are one hour.

  • Missing an occasional rehearsal is okay. Students can review the songs at home and jump back in at the next rehearsal.

  • Practicing at home helps students learn their parts more quickly and feel confident during rehearsals. Even a little regular practice can make a big difference.

Rehearsals & Schedule

  • Yes! Performing is one of the most exciting parts of the program. Bands have three major opportunities to perform at large events during the year including the Towsontown Spring festival, Winter Showcase, and Back to School Bash. We also try to find other unique concert experiences in between the three showcases.

  • The three major showcases are essential for our program and they are required. In-between showcase shows are subject to band availability and are not required.

  • Concerts may take place at local venues or outdoor community spaces depending on the event.

Performances

  • Nope! Our band program has rolling admission, so students can join at any time and there’s no long-term contract. That said, once a student joins a band, we ask that they plan to participate in the next showcase performance so their bandmates aren’t missing an important member.

  • Private lessons are not required, but they are highly recommended. Lessons help students build stronger skills on their instrument and get more out of their band experience.

  • Encouraging regular practice, listening to the songs your child is learning, and attending performances are great ways to support their musical growth.
